EV-DO Rev. B technology advantages and prospects of the system

In February, ZTE announced its CDMA2000 commercial system opened its first EV-DO Rev. B, VoIP phone, EV-DO Revision B of this breakthrough immediately aroused widespread concern in the communications industry.

China Telecom commercial CDMA20001xEV-DO technology with WCDMA and TD-SCDMA 3G technology known as the three criteria. CDMA20001xEV-DO standard in the EV is the "Evolution" the abbreviation of evolution, DO is DataOptimized, that EV-DO technology is a CDMA2000 1x network to provide data services in an effective increase in the means of its evolution line in Figure 1 shown.

This article will first introduce EV-DO Rev. B technology advantage, and then from the user experience, operators of the upgrade costs, market development potential, and compared with the 4G perspective of the EV-DO Rev. B, prospects, but also analyzes the deployment of version B challenge.

EV-DO Rev. B technology advantages

CDMA20001xEV-DO technology in Qualcomm's HDR (HighDataRate) technology based on the evolved, also known as high-speed packet data HRPD (High Rate Packet Data) technology. CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Rev. B technology is a single-carrier EV-DO Revision A technology for multi-carrier expansion, which is called multi-carrier EV-DO. May 2006, 3GPP2 release of EV-DO Rev. B, air interface protocols, namely multi-carrier EV-DO technology.

Version B and Version 0, Version A compared to the most prominent feature is the use of multi-carrier design, number of carriers 1 to 15, can support bandwidths up to 20MHz (15-carrier), which makes AT (AccessTerminal, terminal) can work in the discrete frequency points, in order to achieve frequency selective diversity and load balancing. In addition, version B has good backward compatibility, the previous version of the AT can also be in the new AN (Access Network, Access Network) to work, upgrade the network users can continue to use the original phone, but the rate will not increase.

Time-domain single-carrier can only get on the multi-user diversity, and multi-carrier EV-DO can also be time-domain and frequency domain multi-user diversity, which can improve spectrum efficiency, and thus obtain a higher transmission rate and improve the the uplink and downlink performance. The use of a flexible duplex carrier provisioning, version B system supports flexible carrier deployment scenarios: one for the overlap, that is in the current EV-DO Revision A single-carrier system based on increased carrier; another mixed frequency multiplexing, that is a different carrier with different frequency reuse factor, all uplink carrier reuse factor are 1, and the forward link carrier reuse factor of 1, based on the increased frequency reuse factor 2,3 carrier configuration options. Hybrid frequency reuse a way that EV-DO Revision B system can be asymmetric or fragmented band, band configuration to improve system flexibility and diversity.

Because EV-DO Rev. B devices work in a multi-carrier mode, so the terminal power consumption issues are more demanding. In view of this, EV-DO Rev. B technology to reduce terminal power consumption problems in many areas to improve. EV-DO Rev. B used in the main terminal side of the power optimization techniques are: quick paging channel (QPCH), discontinuous transmission technology (DTX), non-successive receiving technology (DRX). The use of technology to effectively reduce terminal power consumption, thus extending the working hours of the terminal. The main improvements can be summarized as follows:

● support the use of MultilinkRLP forward (carrier frequency) channel aggregation;

● Improved collection management and adaptive pilot selection;

● symmetric and asymmetric mode;

● multi-carrier uplink MAC (the token bucket algorithm);

● adaptive load balancing;

● Optimization of terminal-power technology

● Flexible duplex carrier frequency allocation: In order to meet the symmetric and asymmetric modes.

EV-DO Revision B prospects

EV-DO Revision B as described above, the introduction of the many advantages of technology, in theory, the downlink and uplink throughput respectively 73.5Mbit / s and 27Mbit / s. Actual deployment via a simple software upgrade to get the version of the B available 9.3Mbit / s in the downlink. While its lower upgrade costs, greater market development potential and a relatively mature technology specifications making the version B has been a lot of manufacturers of all ages.

A good user experience

Multi-carrier EV-DO as the channel frequency selectivity and adaptive load balancing, improved forward link performance. A version 0 and version in the version of the first to support the peak rate was 2.4Mbit / s and 3.1Mbit / s, while in Version B can support up to 73.5Mbit / s before the peak rate (using 15 1.25 MHz carrier).

Ordinary end-users generally do not care about a system up and down the line rate of the specific value, and will be more concerned about the user experience. Rev. B asymmetric mode to meet a variety of asymmetric business needs. In addition, version B of the peak rate makes it able to support VoIP services and VoIP services and data concurrency, to support real-time and non real-time and other business requirements. In addition the introduction of multiple carrier frequency system can effectively balance the load, improve system reliability and user quality of service.

Furthermore, since EV-DO Rev. B is fully backward compatible with EV-DO Rev. 0 and Rev. A, Rev. A and Rev. 0 and thus can seamlessly access to a mobile phone version of the B network access services. This means that the version of B that do not require opening new business users do not need because the system upgrade and replace the phone, to a certain extent, the user cost savings.

Lower investment cost carriers

From EV-DO Rev. A to EV-DO Revision B upgrade is completely smooth, not complicated in theory, because by supporting multiple versions of A base station carrier frequency that can be upgraded to EV-DO Revision B evolution. Shown in Figure 2, this update includes base stations and base station controller software update, the terminal, the core network bandwidth adjustment. According to the requirements of different transmission modes, upgrades can be targeted to replace the base station in the channel plate, and other devices in the system completely preserved. Overall upgrade costs should still relatively low.

Figure 2EV-DO Revision B device software upgrade

CDMA20001xEV-DO Rev. B technology flexibility allows operators to leverage existing network investments and currently deployed devices, greatly improving network capacity and performance. High performance devices can support downlink data rates of up to 73.5Mbit / s, while the existing equipment is a simple software upgrade version 3 carrier B also supports 9.3Mbit / s downlink data rates .

Version of the B's flexibility is also reflected in the support of terminal equipment on. Version B is a multi-carrier interface technology, the flexibility of their networks to support the same spectrum of single-carrier and multi-carrier terminal. This means that operators can spend more money for those who do not want the user to provide low-cost single-carrier service, but also for the other who paid higher fees for customers with better performance multi-carrier services, without at the same time with two technologies to support the different needs of users in a certain sense, it reduces the operator's investment.

Large market potential for development

The application mentioned in the text above case as an example, ZTE's version of the B call-completion of the EV-DO Revision B of the first phase, three-carrier bundling technology, each carrier 1.25MHz bandwidth. And mature commercial EV-DO Revision A comparison, EV-DO Rev. B, A, only upgraded version of the software, hardware, without making any changes, the two baseband chip is the same. The facts show that the system can be upgraded to version B to version A fast implementation. With the deployment of version B, the corresponding software and upgrade mobile terminals demand is rapidly increasing, which is conducive to the development of related industries and the industrial chain formed.

4G race

Currently worldwide there are official commercial EV-DO Release 0 and EV-DO Revision A standard. Most major carriers are used in EV-DO Revision A standard, China Telecom is also true.

In terms of user experience, operators of the investment cost or market maturity considerations, deployment, version B seems to step in the selection. Version B has good backward compatibility. In addition, EV-DO Revision B to better support VoIP and multimedia applications, can RAN (RadioAccessNetwork, Radio Access Network) to provide the same QoS guarantee, while other air interface technologies (such as LTE and WiMAX) can not provide this guarantee, so to achieve the same function will start from scratch, and take a long time to achieve the same commercial and version B level. Therefore, at this stage deployment upgrade version B is the right strategic choice.

Technically slightly better version of B has also been a lot of manufacturers of all ages. Other aspects of device manufacturers, such as Shanghai Bell has said, EV-DO Revision B to provide data rates and throughput fully meet the needs of users, so operators can truly mature until after LTE/4G system to choose the right time upgrade their networks. Qualcomm also recently announced that in view of the user on the current 3G network provides data transfer rates and increasing demand for mobile performance, product line evolution at all levels for all EV-DO Rev. B and voice data concurrency (SV-DO ) to provide support.

Deployment of EV-DO Rev. B challenge

Earlier version presented from four B's advantage, but it does not mean that now is the zero-risk deployment of version B, no worries, but in fact the technology itself and some problems to be solved. Version B uses a multi-carrier technology, which can provide higher data transfer rates, which requires the version of the B terminal to be able to support wideband multi-carrier, to a certain extent, the terminal will increase the cost.

In addition to terminal problem, the China Telecom in deciding whether to deploy EV-DO Revision B also need to consider other two operators - China Unicom and China Mobile to deploy the network. If operators decided to upgrade their networks to LTE, so China Telecom in order to ensure its market competitiveness will speed up the CDMA network upgrade to LTE, the same pace, which would greatly reduce the EV-DO Rev. B life cycle.

In addition, EV-DO Revision B version of EV-DOEnhancement technical evolution of the standardization work will also impact the deployment of version B. If 3GPP2 LTE network in the experiment can complete its standard operating and network experiments that EV-DO Rev. B will bring great business opportunities. Introduced by the previous article we already know, the existing network upgrade to version B, the cost is much lower than the new LTE network deployment cost.

All in all, EV-DO Rev. B will support high-resolution high-speed downloads and video telephony, the sudden business to provide a better user experience, mixed frequency multiplexing to improve the system to cover the edge of effective performance, power optimization extended terminal standby and working hours. Furthermore, since the upgrade from version A to version B is not required for the upgrade costs are relatively high, so upgrade to version B from CDMA20001x can make a relatively small cost of business operations to achieve higher returns. It can be said EV-DO Revision B to provide operators with a low-cost and efficient multi-carrier broadband systems. Although the deployment of version B there are some risks, but version B is also very obvious advantages, it should be leading the 3G era, China Telecom alternative mainstream technology.
